Final design

I chose the label with the clouds and added this to all 5 background designs to see which it would look the best on. I thought it looked the best on the light blue background with the purple lines on. This also had a opaque purple overlay. I felt this allowed the label to stand out the most and contrast the background and it was also the design which caught the eye because of the brighter colours compared to my other designs.

Starting my spray can designs

I now started to put my spray can designs together with the backgrounds first. I used the designs which I had hand rendered using paint and scanned them in. I edited them using PhotoShop and changed the hue, saturation and brightness of some of the images. I also used layers and overlay effects to add another design I had created over the top of the background. This was to add some more detail and try to attract the target audiences attention.

Once I had my 5 background designs I started to create sticker designs. I thought about firstly using clouds as the background for my sticker. This would add some detail and is also a subtle background that wont take all the attention. I edited the clouds and change the brightness slightly and also added a blue tint. I then added a feather at the bottom so it faded to white space. This is where I could add text. Other stickers I created using simple blue gradient and darker blue text. I tried to use some textures that I scanned in to add some detail also. I wasn’t keen on this because there was no white space on the label. My last label I created using blue and purple to match the background and added a gradient to the word atmosphere.

Type Ideas

I thought that my design would work best with a label over the background of the spray can. I would need a logo for the word atmosphere so I started to create some ideas in Illustrator. I kept it simple and looked for some different fonts which I thought would suit the theme and also be easy for the target audience to read. I tried some more detailed text designs using tools in Illustrator and edited some letters. For example, one of the designs has a large letter O and this is a different shade of blue compared to the rest of the logo. I preferred the design I created using a thin italic font. I felt this suited the design ideas I had in mind and would look the best on the sticker design I thought about.

Mono-Printing

My tutor thought that we could try some mono printing and see if we could create any designs which could be used in our final designs. First, I had to create the design that I could trace from the create the mono print. I created a design similar to the shape sketch I created earlier. After I had mono printed this I created 2 more designs from free hand. I don’t like the effect you get from mono printing but I will scan these designs in and see if they can improve my designs.

Design ideas for my spray can

I now started to create some design ideas and background ideas for my spray can. I firstly, created some simple blue designs using paint and different materials. I though that I could scan these in eventually and use them for the background of my spray can. I used sponges as well as just a paint brush to try and get a different texture for my background.

I then created some more detailed designs which again could be scanned in and edited in PhotoShop. Some of these designs were based and expanded from my line, tone, shape and texture designs. I used pencils, pens, felt tips, paint and cut outs to create these designs.

Finally, I created a mood board focused on the word atmosphere. I compiled images which I had found online and also the designs I had just created to make this mood board. This was just to give me some inspiration and to compare my ideas to try and get a better idea for which I prefer.

Choosing my spray can

I chose which spray can I was going to re-design and I picked one named atmosphere. The colour for this spray can was a light blue. I started by creating a mind map based around atmosphere and came up with ideas for the background, sticker and colours. I was thinking that a space or sky background would go well with the atmosphere name and also the light blue colour.

Design Ideas (Line,Tone,Shape and Texture)

To expand on my design ideas I sketched 8 design ideas for my spray can based off of line, tone, shape and texture. The second design were much harder to come up with compared to the first designs. I created the designs in black and white and the texture designs were created with the intention to be scanned in and used with my final designs.

Unit 1+4 Initial Idea

To start off units 1+4 I made some mind maps to create some initial ideas for my project. I started with a mind map based around materials which I can use for my design. I then created a mind map for famous artists and what type of art they created. I just included the most famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso. The final mind map I created was for processes. This is how I could use the materials I mentioned before to create effects and designs. For example, using paint and sponges to get a texture and scanning this in to edit and use in Photoshop.
